The La Jolla Natural Health Clinic
Our space, the La Jolla Natural Health Clinic, was crafted with love by Dr. Karin and her family. Soon after moving to San Diego from Portland, Dr. Karin began the journey of crafting a respectful, healing peaceful space that brought a piece of Oregon to La Jolla. Dr. Karin designed the space herself, inspired by the Pendelton "Chief Joseph" blanket that now hangs in the foyer of the office.
What is now the warm and inviting La Jolla Natural Health Clinic started out as a hair salon, complete with stained laminate floors, track lighting, popcorn ceilings and salon sinks. Our first task as a family was to remove the laminate flooring. What began as a family affair resulted in a true labor of love for all of us.
The lighting was designed and made by Dr. Karin's husband Chris, and her father Dennis, a retired electrician. Chris and Karin built the sliding doors from recycled Oregon lumber, with the help of their son who did some of the measuring. Dr. Karin plastered the walls with eco friendly American Clay, a natural product that helps keep the air clean. Of the walls not plastered with clay, many were painted with the help of Dr. Karin's daughter.
Remodeling a space can cause quite a bit of waste, but Dr. Karin was intent on limiting waste from the remodel and reusing as many materials as possible. Baseboard trim boards were cut from old cedar fencing, and the scraps were used to build the front desk. Even the sink in the treatment room, a salon original, got a face lift with the scrap lumber.
